How to Review Inhaler Device Technique

Always use a checklist, one for you and one for patient to review as you go through steps. Consider use of video on patient or caregiver's phone to capture correct technique and or coaching tips. Involve family or caregiver in all teaching, as this may assist with adherence (even if technique is good). How to use a Diskus

Interactive Checklist

Prepare the device

  1. Open to expose the mouthpiece (hold in one hand, put thumb of other hand on thumb grip and push until you hear a click, this is the first click of TWO which you need to hear)
  2. Slide lever until a second click is heard

Get ready to inhale.

  1. Keep level throughout
  2. Breathe out normally (away from inhaler)
  3. Place mouthpiece in your mouth, between teeth and seal lips around mouthpiece
  4. Breathe in forcefully and deeply
  5. Hold breath for 5 to 10 seconds (while removing the inhaler from your mouth)
  6. Breathe out (away from inhaler)

  1. Slide the cover to the side until you hear one click

Get ready to inhale

  1. Breath out (away from the inhaler)
  2. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth and seal lips around mouthpiece
  3. Take care that you do not block the air vent with your fingers
  4. Breathe in steadily as deeply as you can.
  5. Hold breathe for 5 to 10 seconds, while removing inhaler from mouth
  6. Breathe out (away from inhaler)

How to use the Turbuhaler device

Interactive Checklist

Prepare the device:

  1. Hold upright, twist (clockwise) and remove the cap
  2. Turn the coloured base fully in one direction, then fully back in the other direction. During this process ONE click is heard. Hold inhaler at the bottom to avoid blocking air vents on the body of the inhaler.

Get ready to inhale

  1. Breathe out (away from the inhaler)
  2. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth and seal lips around mouthpiece
  3. Breathe in forcefully and deeply while tilting the inhaler (like drinking a glass of water)
  4. Hold breathe for 5 to 10 seconds, while removing inhaler from mouth
  5. Breathe out (away from inhaler)
  6. Repeat steps 2 to 7 for prescribed number of dosages
  7. Once finished place cap back on inhaler by twisting until it locks.
